The causes of tube failures are many and varied ranging from specific operational problems, design problems, as well as inadequate surveillance or poor engineering practices. There are many ways to reduce the number of failurs such as improved inspection can often detect high levels of degradation in areas before they become a problem thereby eliminating costly tube failures. The appropriate strategy for a Station will vary  depending on the age and type of boiler as well as the engineering and metallurgical support available.
